Architecture class of 1974

‘Sparks were reignited’ as the Architecture class of 1974 met as a group last October for the first time since graduation.

Forty years to the day since they began their studies, alumni, partners and former staff travelled from as far away as California, Oslo and Abu Dhabi for a celebratory weekend.

The group enjoyed a tour around Edinburgh College of Art as well as reliving their student days with a pub crawl, trek up Arthur’s Seat and look back on old photos.

The fellowship

Organiser Stephen Newsom noted that the nature of studying architecture, working as a group at times late into the night, has meant that the group formed strong bonds which remain to this day.

This was clearly something that many alumni in attendance were impressed by.

Fundamentally we all seem to be the same characters that we were at 18, 19… so the fellowship of the studio was picked up with ease and conversations flowed…

Fashion show

The slide show of old photos proved to be a popular highlight, evoking strong memories and raising a laugh over hairstyles and fashion sense which had somewhat dramatically changed over the years.

The reunion was particularly special as former lecturer Graeme Orr made an appearance, and gave an impromptu talk to his captivated former students. Studio tutor Robert Smart was also in attendance.

To sit again in the old lecture room and once more listen to Graeme Orr orating was a unique experience.

Future plans

The group were also met by John Brennan, current Head of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at ECA, who gave a welcoming toast before handing the group over to current students for a tour of the building, organised by Development and Alumni staff.

It was such fun to be all together again, wasn't it? Hope we all can meet again in the not too distant future.

Jane Toreson

Hopefully this will not be the last time the group gathers together, with plans being made for future reunions and a promise not to leave it so long next time.
