Tell us about your time at the University

I was a transferred student from International Medical University, Malaysia. This unique twinning/bridging programme provided me the opportunity to study at the famous and historical medical school of University of Edinburgh.

I chose University of Edinburgh because it one of the oldest medical schools in the United Kingdom and I wanted to experience the Scottish lifestyle.

My favourite memory is none other than wearing a kilt during my undergraduate graduation at McEwan Hall. It was a once-of-a-life-time experience that I could not get anywhere else in the world!

Tell us about your Experiences since leaving the University

After obtaining my MBChB from University of Edinburgh, I then worked as a surgical doctor with NHS, specialising in Ear, Nose and Throat surgery. I then moved to Cardiff to read law.

The decision to move careers was inspired by Edinburgh alumnus Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In addition to the fact that he graduated from University of Edinburgh obtaining a medical degree, he later became a world famous author.

He inspired me that a doctor can do more other than becoming a doctor and hence I made my decision to become a Barrister-at-law.

I passed by Barrister Professional Training Course in July 2016 and have been called to Lincoln’s Inn, a  society of lawyers, this year.

My hope in future is to improve the healthcare system in Malaysia from a policy point of view. My background as a doctor and a barrister will help me tremendously in my job and I thank University of Edinburgh for educating me to become a medical doctor.

Alumni wisdom

Think laterally, don’t be confined and restricted to the fact that you are a medical doctor. You can do more than that to help patients and the wider community.
