When Susan Jackson isn't thinking about sports, the chartered accountant and three-time Commonwealth Games athlete is helping to run a homes developer in Fife. Name Susan Jackson (née Bell) Degree MA (Hons) Economics and Accounting Year of Graduation 1995 Your time at the University Image I chose Edinburgh as it offered exactly what I was looking for in a degree. I really liked the option of taking a joint honours in both Economics and Accounting. Whilst I was at the University of Edinburgh, I was heavily involved in sport, specifically the Rifle Club and Ski Club. In third and fourth year, I was part of the Rifle Club committee, where I have wonderful memories of friendships, travels and competitions won and lost. I really enjoyed introducing people to the sport, and also leading the more experienced of our club to success. One of my most memorable experiences was winning the Eva Bailey Cup for the most outstanding female sports performance. Your experiences since leaving the University My degree took me down the route of Chartered Accountancy – I trained with Touche Ross (now Deloitte) and spent 12 years there. Following this I took up a role at a small charity in Edinburgh – Winning Scotland Foundation – where I was initially a programme manager and then subsequently Senior Director. This was a challenging and interesting role that enabled me to combine my passion for developing young people through sport and use my business skills and expertise to grow a small charity into a sustainable organisation. From there, I joined Campion Homes, a new homes developer based in Fife, initially as Finance Dircector, subsequently being appointed Joint Managing Director in September 2017. During my 12 years at Deloitte I had a continued involvement with the University of Edinburgh Alumni Rifle Club, which ultimately led me to compete for Scotland at three Commonwealth Games. Other than graduating, my proudest University of Edinburgh moment has to be when I was inducted into the University Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Susan Jackson Alumni wisdom I would advise all students to get involved, try new things and take yourself out of your comfort zone. Pushing yourself beyond your current limits in a safe, secure environment surrounded by hundreds of others doing the same will give you great skills for future life.
