August 2013 | Alumni Profiles

This month we chat to an insect specialist turned TV presenter, a prolific writer, an expert in brain imaging, a successful actor and a fundraiser for a children's charity. Evidence, if it were needed, of the wealth and breadth of talent in our alumni community.

We are interested in the role that the University has played in your life, either directly - in terms of skills and knowledge - or indirectly, via friends, experiences or chance encounters.

Please get in touch and you and your experiences could feature on our website.

Dr Grace Lee, who has recently founded the University’s first Alumni Club in Vancouver, tells us how personal tragedy, respect for others, and a penchant for sheep have led her to a successful career in investigating brain imaging.

Dr George McGavin takes time out of his filming commitments to tell us how he has gone from a long-term teaching and research career, to becoming a TV presenter and public speaker on Zoology and public engagement with science.

English graduate Catherine Czerkawska tells us about the vivid memories she has from being a student in the early 1970s (including a fabulous photograph on The Meadows), and about her subsequent career as a prolific writer.

Ed Stoppard is an actor well known to cinema and television audiences having appeared in productions ranging from the Oscar-winning The Pianist and the recent BBC mini-series, The Politician’s Husband. He recalls his student days and foray into acting.

Emily Prince takes us through her journey from sociology graduate and drama enthusiast, to community fundraiser - by way of the American Youth Foundation in Michigan and the HSS admissions office.
