Name Shirley Pu Degree Russian and History of Art Year of graduation 2017 Image At the moment I haven’t travelled for more than one year! I believe this is the same for most people. Now with more time staying in town, instead of going to Taipei and Tokyo for the weekend, I've start exploring the countryside of Hong Kong, discovering another lovely side of my favourite city. Your time at the University At the University, all the professors, teachers and students came from different countries and backgrounds, and I learned so much from all of them. I particularly enjoyed a lot the small group classes, which allowed me to express my point of view and have discussions with my peers. I graduated in 2017 from the University of Edinburgh with an MA in Russian Studies and History of Art. An important reason why I chose Edinburgh was the variety of majors that I could study. I couldn't find the combination of Russian and Art History anywhere else. At the University, all the professors, teachers and students came from different countries and backgrounds, and I learned so much from all of them. I particularly enjoyed a lot the small group classes, which allowed me to express my point of views and have discussions with my peers. During my four years of studies, I spent a year abroad in Moscow, which provided me with the opportunity to brush up on my Russian language skills, and allowed me to compare the real Russia to what I had learned about it in books. Edinburgh itself is very fascinating and unique in its character with the blend of ancient structures and modern architecture. I loved exploring little pieces of history while walking down the medieval alleys and submerging myself in different galleries and museums. I also took the opportunity to travel around Europe, which truly broadened my horizons, and it was very helpful to my studies in the history of art, as I could see with my eyes all the fascinating pieces of European art and monuments that I learned about from my courses. Your experiences since leaving the University After I graduated, I worked at several places before landing a job with a major property developer in Hong Kong. Currently I work on client engagement for a museum-retail complex. Customers not only shop at the mall but can enrich their daily life through the naturally immersive experience of art, culture, nature and commerce. Prior to this job, I worked in different industries like performing arts, youth education and finance. Although it takes time to try out different jobs, it is important to figure out what you really want to do and what kind of job is suitable for you. I'm also currently President of the University of Edinburgh Alumni Club of Hong Kong, a thriving group of graduates in the Hong Kong area who meet and connect for social and networking events. We've had a very good response to the Scottish dance classes that we organise with the Hong Kong Highlanders Reel Club, which really reminds us of the ceilidh dance parties that we had at Edinburgh. We also organise events that allow our alumni to share their experiences of university and their working field with current students Life during Covid-19 With the pandemic situation and not being able to travel, it has allowed me to spend more time with my family, which I really treasure a lot. Work life can be very busy and you need to spend extra time on networking, whereas now I allow myself to spend more quality time at home. I have picked up some of my old hobbies like painting and playing harp. Simple things like cooking for your family and watching TV together also make me realise that family is really the most important thing in my life. Alumni wisdom When you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask them. Everyone in the University is very helpful, however if you don’t ask when you have problems, no one will be able to help you. Be more proactive, and this will open up a lot more opportunities for you. Related links The University of Edinburgh Alumni Club of Hong Kong - Facebook page This article was published on 2024-10-28
