Your time at the University

I was looking to do some further study, and reasoned that climate change was the issue of our times. I investigated universities in both Ireland and the UK, looking for a quality course that would address both scientific and policy aspects. Importantly I needed an online learning option since I have a family and run my own business. The course at Edinburgh University was perfect, and as it was 100% online it was an even easier choice, as well as being more environmentally appropriate in terms of no travel! I had actually completed my undergraduate degree in Edinburgh 20 years before, so also had a great affection for the city and the University, so this helped!

The experience of online learning was great – the tutors were friendly and accessible, and students and tutors had great online discussions on climate issues. There was a wide range of experiences and ages in the group, which enhanced the whole experience. The assessments were challenging but also allocated in a manner which allowed for a balance between work, family and study.

As the course was 100% online there were no trips to campus, which while environmentally responsible was sometimes missed!  However many of us made it to Edinburgh for our graduation last November – it was great to finally meet the tutors and fellow students we had ‘virtually’ got to know over the years, as well as some students from the on-campus course.

Your experiences since leaving the University

As a mature student, I already had a background in social and environmental studies and work. I have my own consultancy which examines the social and livelihood impacts of major natural resource, infrastructure and conservation projects on communities, and helps to manage these impacts. Part of this work often involves the issue of resettlement of communities affected by projects. My dissertation therefore sought to combine my work experience and new climate change knowledge, by looking at planned relocation as an adaptive response to sea level rise. Therefore as well as learning so much about one of the most important issues of our time, I hope to now be able to contribute to adaptation measures through my work and my business.

Alumni wisdom

Don’t worry about going back to studies after many years, or whether you will be able to balance study with family and work – just go for it!  It will be hard work, but you will be glad you did.
