Your time at the University

I chose Edinburgh because I fell in love with the place when I first visited. I remember mist around the castle when the train pulled into Waverley and I felt I was in a 1930s Hitchcock film. I have never before or since lived in such a breathtakingly romantic city.

I remember endless rehearsals in the Siberian conditions of the Bedlam Theatre; my duffle coat catching fire when I stood too close to a heater; late night haggis suppers and Irn Bru; but mainly, I suppose, hours of dreamy wandering around those magical streets and squares.

Tell us about your Experiences since leaving the University

I had no idea what I wanted to do in my last year at the University. I had spent half of my spare time acting with Bedlam and the other half writing for and editing The Student newspaper. So drama or journalism seemed possibilities but I realised I didn’t really have the passion for either.

Then I answered an obscure advertisement in The Times Educational Supplement, seeking an English teacher to go to Salonika, Greece. I had a whale of a time there, met my wife, and realised a passion for teaching.

Twenty eight years later, I am Headmaster of The English School in Nicosia, Cyprus and advising our senior pupils to head for Edinburgh. I still direct plays and write all kinds of things for the school. So the wheel has come full circle.

Alumni wisdom

Edinburgh is wonderful but take the time to get out and get to know more of Scotland. I got to know Glasgow and St. Andrews but now wish I’d seen more.
