Edinburgh alumnus seeks sponsors for a record-breaking expedition

Alumnus Darren Slevin is preparing to undertake a record-breaking unsupported expedition to the South Pole and is currently seeking sponsorship to support the challenge.

In November 2026, Edinburgh graduate, Darren Slevin and his friend Nathan Lumb will attempt a world-first 1,136-mile unsupported return ski to the South Pole in -40°C with each of them pulling a 140kg sled.

If they succeed, they will be the first British and Irish team, and only the 4th and 5th people in history, to reach this goal since the first successful expedition to the South Pole in 1911. More people have been to the Moon or have stood on the summit of Mt Everest than have completed this journey. The year 2026 will also mark 115 years since the first explorers arrived at the South Pole.

Darren has launched the 90° South Club - 90 sponsorship spots at £1,000 each - offering global press exposure, promotion (logo on sleds), and inclusion in post-expedition talks and events. The team are also available to come to companies to give a motivational talk and carry out team building activities with a polar theme.
