Financial Solutions for Students

Last year the University was excited to launch the new UNITE Foundation Accommodation and Access Bursaries. These awards have opened the doors of the University to six first year students, providing free accommodation and additional support as they embark on their degree.

Helena Shorrock, from Kendal in the Lake District, has just begun her degree in History. Coming to university was always her ambition but she knew it would prove financially challenging. She says Edinburgh stood out immediately amongst her options because of the generous bursary support it offers students.

Transforming student lives

Helena was awarded a UNITE Bursary which she says has transformed her experience of university life:

Nothing compared to the support offered by Edinburgh, and the UNITE award was the best of all. It has meant I can focus on my studies without worrying about money and finding a job. Coming to university would not have been possible without it. It has made this opportunity possible.

The UNITE Foundation

At a time of unprecedented financial pressure on students, The UNITE Foundation is committed to ensuring higher education remains open to all those with the potential to excel. Their awards provide modern accommodation close to the University and city centre, allowing students to make the most of life in Edinburgh.

Higher Education is quite literally life changing. It provides a unique opportunity for intellectual development and unlocks the door to so many valuable and interesting careers. We believe that this should be a realistic option for everyone regardless of background or financial situation.

Paul Harris

Chair of the UNITE Foundation

The University would like to thank the Foundation for this extremely generous support.
