Originally from Glasgow, Dr Mills studied medicine and pharmacology at Edinburgh and graduated in 2000. He joined the University’s Centre for Cardiovascular Science three years later and has since been involved in globally significant collaborative research.

He is currently a Reader in Cardiology and British Heart Foundation Intermediate Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh and Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Alongside these commitments, Nicholas also teaches on the MBChB course and supervises both clinical and non-clinical PhD students.

Working together

In teaming up with specialist researchers across the world he and his colleagues have conducted studies that among other things have highlighted how pollution affects heart health and how a simple blood test could save the lives of thousands of women by detecting signs of a heart attack.

Another collaborative initiative which Dr Mills is involved with is the Cardiovascular Outcomes Research Edinburgh (CORE) group. This group brings together researchers from the Centres for Cardiovascular Science and Population Health Sciences who aim to improve clinical outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease.

Peer recognition

Despite being in the early stages of his career, Dr Mills has made such a significant contribution to work in his field that his fellow colleagues nominated him for the 2014 Chancellor’s Rising Star Award.

Since 2003 members of staff from across the University have been honoured for their outstanding contributions to both teaching and research.

The Chancellor’s Awards comprise one of the most important ways in which The University can recognise the achievements of individual members of staff.

2014 awards

Presented annually at a gala dinner at Holyrood Palace by The Chancellor, HRH The Princess Royal, the 2014 Awards went to Dr Elizabeth Bomberg, Professor Margaret Frame, Professor Jo Shaw and Dr Nicholas Mills.

Dr Bomberg received her award for teaching, whilst Professor Frame and Professor Shaw were recognised for their research.

The Chancellor’s Rising Star Award was awarded to Dr Mills in recognition for both his contribution to date and his potential for future success. This award is testament to the vital work Dr Mills has been undertaking at the University.
