Birthday Honours 2013

Jewellery entrepreneur Bec Astley Clarke, Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre Director Dr Teresa Anderson and former Leader of the Scottish Conservative Party David McLetchie were among alumni recognised in the Queen's birthday honours list last week.

Ms Rebecca Clarke MBE

Philosophy and Politics graduate Bec Astley Clarke founded her jewellery business Astley Clarke in London in 2006 after being inspired by a 2005 visit to Basel Jewellery Fair. What started out as an online-only retailer now has a London Boutique and concessions in Selfridges, Harrods and Liberty.

Rebecca has been recognised with an MBE for services to the Jewellery Industry.

Dr Teresa Anderson MBE

Dr Teresa Anderson studied for her physics degree at the University of Manchester, followed by a PhD at Edinburgh before returning to the University of Manchester's Jodrell Bank to develop and build the new Discovery Centre.

Jodrell Bank is home to the Stargazing Live series for BBC TV and has supported a variety of public engagement initiatives including Girls’ Night Out (Under The Stars), an event for girls with an interest in physics, astronomy and planetary science.

Dr Anderson has been recognised with an MBE for services to Astrophysics.

David McLetchie CBE MSP

David McLetchie graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in Law in 1974 and qualified as a solicitor in 1976. Active in student politics from 1968, David was the Conservative candidate for Edinburgh Central in the 1979 General Election.

He became leader of the Scottish Conservatives upon the creation of the Scottish Parliament in 1999 and now serves as the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Lothian electoral region.

David has been appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
