Amal Bholah (right) receives his award at State House in Mauritius Dr Amal Bholah, a 2017 graduate of Global eHealth, has won the Entrepreurial Award at the British Council Alumni Awards 2019. Amal, who is based in Mauritius, is a medical doctor who founded Smart Health, a mobile app that aims to make healthcare services more accessible, affordable and efficient. Shirley Hall officially opens Leading businesswoman and IT pioneer Dame Stephanie Shirley has been recognised for her commitment to philanthropy aimed at improving understanding of autism and other developmental conditions by having a prominent University lecture theatre at the Medical School renamed in her honour. Photo: James Appleton Back in November we interviewed alumna Cal Major (Clinical Veterinary Medicine 2012) about her solo paddleboard voyage from Land's End to John O'Groats to highlight the effects of plastic debris on UK beaches. Now Cal has taken part in Stand Up for Our Seas 2019, which saw her and four other women paddle 100km around the Maldives to explore and identify the threats faced by the environment and marine life from plastic pollution, ghost fishing gear, and climate change. Make sense of sustainability Advanced Sustainability Programme is a dynamic three-day programme that aims to further equip attendees to strategically deal effectively with the challenges posed by sustainability and enhanced organisational performance. Supercomputer boost The University is to host a £79 million national supercomputer that will be five times quicker than the UK’s current capabilities. The supercomputer is hundreds of thousands of times more powerful than a traditional desktop computer and will be used to run massive research simulations. Find out more 7. Principal formally opens China medical campus Image 7. A significant collaboration in China Professor Peter Mathieson has officially opened a campus in China that will translate medical research into technologies to improve healthcare. He joined staff and students at the Haining campus near Shanghai to mark the formal launch of the Zhejiang University-University of Edinburgh (ZJE) Institute. Find out more 8.
