Sporting heroes meet and mingle with alumni

Sports reporter Ian Turner led the discussion and encouraged probing questions from the audience of alumni and friends.

He was joined on stage by Olympic Gold Medallist Katherine Grainger and former Scottish Rugby Union player Scott Hastings.

Questions from alumni touched on how much sport is included in UK school curriculums and the barriers faced by women who dream of competing in sporting events from countries such as Saudi Arabia.

In the UK girls can have major ambitions in all areas of life including sport but in certain parts of the world there isn’t the equality even with basic human rights that we have in Britain and that is something we have to fight for. Women’s sport has made massive strides over the past twenty years and it is important that we do everything we can to make sure that it continues to capture the imagination and change women’s lives for the better.

A chance to network

A broad cross section of alumni attended the event, including 1968 graduates through to recent alumni. The network were especially pleased to welcome so many new faces to the event.

Ann West, committee member, said afterwards, ‘The evening went very well and there were many positive comments over drinks. Ian was terrific in the mood he established and the way he ran the discussion and of course the two guests were great.’

The next event to look forward to for London based alumni and friends will be a spectacular Burns Supper and ceilidh on 24th January, complete with traditional food and drink, toasts, poetry and a Scottish ceilidh.
