The University of Edinburgh is saddened to learn of the passing of Edinburgh PhD alumnus and University Regent Dr Edward J. Feulner. Dr Feulner completed a PhD in Social Sciences at the University in 1981. He was closely involved as a founding Director of the USA Development Trust for the University of Edinburgh in 1992. Over the last three decades, this incorporated 501(c)3 Trust has worked with donors to support extraordinary opportunities for US students from all backgrounds, has funded world class research, and has engendered and strengthened partnerships between Edinburgh and internationally recognised centres of teaching and research excellence in the USA. Ed continued his engagement with the Trust throughout his lifetime, first as a Director and then as an Emeritus Director. He consistently encouraged and supported the Trust’s role in building on the historic links between Edinburgh and the United States (with three alumni having signed the Declaration of Independence), while also setting out a forward-looking, positive agenda for future generations. Ed was also a member of the Edinburgh University Campaign Board between 2006 and 2012. He was awarded Benefactor status in 2006 in recognition of his generosity and active fund-raising for the University, and was made a Regent of the University in 2012.The University extends its condolences to Dr Feulner’s family and to all who knew him.
