Max Sanderson Chosen object: 'The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat' by Oliver Sacks Max is the lead audio producer for the Guardian where he produces the ‘Science Weekly’ podcast, among other standalone projects and podcast series. His media work has also featured on the Guardian Music Blog, BBC World Service Radio, BBC Radio 4 and live at the TEDMED Conference in the US. He is most proud of his work on ‘Beyond the Blade’, an award-winning multimedia series exploring knife crime in Britain. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2012 with a BSc in Neuroscience and holds an MSc in Science Media Production from Imperial College London. If sat beside Max at a dinner party, you would most likely hear him waxing lyrically about how he really loves science (with the tattoos to prove it) or boasting proudly about his allotment (no tattoos…yet). Melissa Terras Chosen object: Trinket box and vintage postcard Melissa is Professor of Digital Cultural Heritage here at the University of Edinburgh. As well as leading digital aspects of research within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, she heads up the Edinburgh Centre for Data, Culture and Society and directs research at Edinburgh Futures Institute. She explores how we can use data to understand the past, and works with a variety of libraries, archives, and museums on how best to deploy digitisation technologies. After graduating from the University of Glasgow in Classical Art History and English Literature (MA) and again in Computing Science (MSc), Melissa received her doctorate in Engineering from the University of Oxford, where she investigated the use of information engineering technologies to process and read Roman texts.
